Back in school, I did what most children were taught to do - follow the system, pass the tests, aim for the "good job". I didn't question it. Nobody around me did either. We were all playing a game where the rules were never explained, but the penalties for slipping up were very real.
And I was good - just not at that they were measuring. Not at football (though I had a wicked left foot in tennis-ball-football), but in people. Influence. Storytelling. Energy. Creating groups, running ideas, making things happen. None of that mattered once the bell rang. Back to the desk. Back to silence. Back to the grind for grades that promised a future no one could guarantee.
I walked out of school with 10 O-Levels and no idea what to do next.
My dreams? Radio. TV. Broadcasting. Making people laugh, feel and think. But the system didn't have boxes for that - just more qualifications. So I followed the "safe" path. A levels. Law school. Respectable but wrong. I pushed hard, failed harder. Left feeling like I'd wasted my parents' hopes and money. And honestly, I felt like I'd wasted my potential.
But somewhere in the wilderness - DJ-ing, hospital radio, entertainment gigs in holiday resorts - I found myself. And finally, I found a path where my voice was the asset. That led me to BBC... then to stages around the world... then to where I am now, helping others become unforgettable.
The big lie?
That the system will take care of you if you just behave and play along.
The truth?
You have to build you own game, listen to what you're great at, and trust what the classroom never valued.

That's the world I was gearing up for back then when I was just 7 or 8 years old.
It took decades of detours to get here - but now that I've arrived, I feel completely and utterly in my zone.
