From The Field: My Story
"The day I nearly said no to everything I wanted..."
I was offered the biggest opportunity of my career.
To lead entertainment at the Emirates Rugby Sevens — the Gulf’s largest sporting event.
Not DJing.
Running. Everything.
Pitch coordination. Referees. Medical. Cheerleaders. Sponsors. Live broadcast. Two stadiums.
And I almost turned it down.
Not because I wasn’t ready.
Because I didn’t believe I was.
"If I mess this up, I’ll never work again."
But then I realised... if I say no, someone else takes the shot. And my whole team loses work.
So I said yes.
And I panicked.
Then I asked better questions:
- Who would I hire for this role?
- What do they need?
- Can I do it?
And the answer was:
Me. I would hire me.
That was 20 years ago. And I’ve delivered every year since.
Imposter syndrome nearly stole everything.
Don’t let it do that to you.
The Enemy Within
What imposter syndrome really sounds like?
It sounds like:
"They'll find out I'm a fraud.:
"I'm not ready yet."
"Who do I think I am?"
It shows up everywhere:
- In meetings.
- On stage
- In your inbox
- In your dreams
You learned it as a child.
You were told: "Wait your turn." "Don't speak out." "Who gave you permission?"
But you're not that child anymore.
You're not waiting for permission.
You're here to lead.
And yes, leadership is terrifying.
But it's where transformation lives.
