I rarely discuss race. It’s uncomfortable for everyone, often exposing parts of ourselves that we’d rather avoid. But, sometimes, it’s vital.
In the UK, the legacy of slavery and its abolition is complex, with effects that ripple through generations. While slavery was abolished in 1833, British taxpayers, including descendants of those enslaved, continued paying off government debts related to it until 2015—an astounding sum equivalent to £17 billion today. This fact is a stark reminder of how deeply societal structures can hold onto inequality and how those influences shape our present.
Growing up in the UK, I felt this invisible weight—proud to be British but often sensing I didn’t fully belong. Moving to the UAE three decades ago gave me room to redefine myself. Here, I found my voice without restraint, experiencing a freedom I hadn’t known. I’ve never stopped being a proud British man, yet I’ve come to realise that of colour is still an unavoidable part of that identity.
Black History Month and Reclaiming Our Voices
For those who feel our voices have been muted, Black History Month offers a chance to reclaim and honour our stories. It’s a time to connect with our identity, our lineage, and understand that our voice matters. Here’s how to discover that voice authentically and impactfully:
1. Embrace Your Story and Strength
Your voice has roots—know them, honour them, and draw power from them. As we celebrate Black History Month, stand tall on the shoulders of those who came before us.
2. Define Your Success
Define what success looks like for you—not what others prescribe. The sense of purpose deepens when you own your journey.
3. Build Your Legacy
Make your voice your legacy. Influence lives beyond yourself, knowing that your legacy is not just about remembrance—it’s about inspiring action.
4. Challenge Self-Doubt
Imposter syndrome is real, but it doesn’t define you. Silence that inner critic. Trust that you’re meant to be here, and remember—you belong.
5. Ask Growth-Driven Questions
Replace "Why me?" with "What’s next?" Every question you ask is a step toward action, progress, and growth.
6. Surround Yourself with Visionaries
Mentors, allies, and role models shape your path. Build a circle that lifts you higher, supporting your journey toward your goals.
7. Show Up Fully
Wherever you are, be present. Speak with conviction and don’t hold back. If the room isn’t ready for you, build one that is. Show up fully, knowing you’re here for a reason.
Black History Month isn’t just about looking back—it’s about owning the future. The world is listening. What will you say?
